CHAMBERSBURG – Congressman John Joyce, M.D. (R-Pa.-13) recently visited Mercy House of Chambersburg, taking a comprehensive tour of the building and engaging with key stakeholders.
Mercy House is an independent nonprofit and is the first home of its kind in Franklin County, serving members of the community and surrounding counties who cannot be cared for at home or don’t need to be hospitalized, according to the facility website.
Uniquely designed to manage end-of-life care, Mercy House employs specially trained and licensed caregivers who are attentive to individual needs. Partnering with area hospice agencies in creating comprehensive plans for holistic care, Mercy House is proud to be part of the movement to improve the end-of-life experience for individuals, families, and friends.
During his visit, Congressman Joyce:
· Toured guest rooms, getting a firsthand look at the end-of-life care provided
· Spoke with family members at the bedside of a guest and shared their expression of gratitude to the caregivers
· Talked with board members, staff, volunteers and donors about the organization’s mission and the journey from a dream of this organization to the reality of a fully operational care home in less than two years
“Mercy House of Chambersburg plays a vital role in our community,” said Joyce said, noting that as a student he had worked in a hospice unit. “What you’ve established here in providing this level of compassionate care is the beginning of a great legacy.”
Ashley Winters, executive director, added, “We’re pleased to have Congressman Joyce see firsthand the impact of this home, the first of its kind in Franklin County. With his commitment to healthcare issues in central Pennsylvania, Dr. Joyce understands our mission and the need for specialized end-of-life care.”
