IRP fall semester starts Sept. 9 with engaging lectures

CHAMBERSBURG — The Institute for Retired Persons’ fall semester will begin Monday, Sept. 9. The program offers a diverse array of lectures and activities tailored for retirees seeking continued learning and intellectual stimulation.

The semester’s schedule features a mix of virtual and in-person events:

  • Mondays and Wednesdays: One Zoom lecture at 9 a.m.
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays: Two in-person lectures at the Menno Haven Life Center, scheduled for 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., concluding at 11:45 a.m.

The Fall 2024 lineup includes a variety of topics:

  • “The Falconry Girl” by Margaret Young, exploring the world of raptors and falconry
  • “Battle of the Bulge: Small Bands of American Heroes Have Huge Impact” by Leon Reed, examining key skirmishes from World War II
  • “Type 2 Diabetic Disease: How does it impact us?” by Dr. Heemin Rhee, discussing the latest in diabetes research and treatment
  • “California Dreamin’: Birds!” by Kurt Schwarz, showcasing spectacular bird photography from a California birding trip

The enrollment fee for the semester is $25 per person or $40 for a couple. Menno Haven residents and those participating exclusively in Zoom lectures are exempt from enrollment requirements. Interested parties can find additional details on the IRP website.

A highlight of the semester is a bus trip to Mount Vernon scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 25. Final sign-ups for this excursion will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 8:15 AM at the Menno Haven Life Center.
