Rubin Stevenson, senior associate athletics director at Frostburg State University, has been selected as the 2024 recipient of the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents Staff Award, the highest honor bestowed on staff members by USM. Stevenson received accolades in the Category of Outstanding Service to Students in an Academic or Residential Environment.

Presented to staff employees who have demonstrated excellence beyond the scope of their full-time core job responsibilities, the Board of Regents Staff Award is based on the impact the individual has on his or her department, school or community and the quality of their work within their institution, community or surrounding environment.

“I’m honored to be chosen for the Board of Regents award and thank Frostburg State staff, administration and the community for moving my name forward for consideration,” said Stevenson. “It is very rewarding to know that others appreciate the job that you do to help your university and surrounding community. To be recognized at the state level is amazing, and I truly share this award with everyone here at FSU.”

Stevenson has been with FSU for 32 years, and his dedication and impact on students go far beyond his job description. He has personally advised more than 1,000 first-semester students, ensuring their seamless integration into FSU. And because of his lengthy tenure at the University, his institutional knowledge is vast, making him a reliable resource for new students.

Beyond advising, Stevenson actively mentors students in the Introduction to Higher Education (ORIE 101) course, consistently receiving outstanding evaluations. Students often seek him out during their time at FSU because of the lasting connections he makes with them. His influence extends beyond students, however, as he trains peer mentors and often comforts anxious parents of incoming first-year students.

“Rubin is not just an exceptional staff member; he is a transformative force in the lives of countless students,” said FSU’s acting president, Al Delia. “His dedication, empathy and institutional knowledge make him the ideal recipient of this prestigious award.”

Award winners will be recognized at a special ceremony in September and will also receive a plaque and monetary award for their exceptional achievements.
