Frostburg State claims MEC acrobatics & tumbling championship

FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Acrobatics & Tumbling team avenged their regular season loss to Fairmont State by defeating the Fighting Falcons 270.465-266.770 in the Mountain East Conference championship meet on Saturday afternoon.
 
In a rematch of each of the past two MEC Tournaments, the sides were evenly contested in the Compulsory Event, with Frostburg coming out narrowly ahead 37.125-36.8. The largest advantage posed by the Bobcats was a 9.80 in the pyramid heat, while also impressing in the toss (9.675) and acro (9.35) heats, winning three out of the four available.
 
Frostburg then won the Acro event in commanding fashion, with a 28.20 to Fairmont’s 25.60. The Bobcats scored a 9.275 or above in each of the three heats, with a high of a 9.475 in the 7-Element.
 
The momentum continued into the Pyramid, where Frostburg secured a close 29.025-28.90 event win, putting up high scores of 9.80 in both the Inversion and Open heats. At the half, the Bobcats held a three-point lead at 94.35-91.30.
 
Continuing to out-match Fairmont, Frostburg won the Toss 27.75-27.175, once again winning each of the three heats. Their highest score came in the Open heat, using a 9.525 en route to their event victory.
 
The Bobcats made it five event wins out of five in the Tumbling event, outscoring the Falcons 53.875-52.025. Frostburg took five out of the six heats, scoring highest in the Open (9.825) and Aerial (9.575) heats, featuring seniors Abbie Baker and Sydney Green, respectively.
 
Taking a five-point lead into the team event, the Bobcats were able to withstand a 96.270-94.49 loss in the team event to win the meet 270.465-266.770 and secure back-to-back titles in just their fourth season as a program.
 
With the win, Frostburg improves to 7-2 on the year, while Fairmont falls to 7-2. Both teams will now await their fates in the final National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association rankings to see if they qualify for the national tournament, which will be held in Fairmont from April 25-28, 2025.
