Area YMCA club swimmers from Chambersburg, Waynesboro, and Hagerstown have spent their summers improving in the fastest way possible: Live competition.
The three clubs took on a trio of meets in July, starting with the Maryland NBAC Summer Classic in St. Mary’s City, Md. The meet, held from July 5-8, was highlighted by the Chambersburg Memorial YMCA girls, who earned four individual wins and finished on top of the 14-team standings.
Chambersburg’s Penny Richardson (100 backstroke, 11-12), Ellery Hayes (50 breaststroke, 11-12), Audrey Keller (50 backstroke, 13-14), and Xiomara Del Rosario (100 freestyle, open) all won their respective events, while the Chambersburg boys got one victory in the 50 butterfly from Christian Pong in the open division.
Chambersburg and Waynesboro collided in a dual meet on July 13. Chambersburg’s girls swept the 400 freestyle and 400 medley relays, and got individual wins from Calla Hoffman (100 backstroke), Hailey Fegan (100 breaststroke), and Keller (100 butterfly). Mady Barker highlighted the Waynesboro girls with a trifecta of wins in the 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle, and 200 IM, with Vanna Keyser winning a pair of events in the 100 freestyle and 200 backstroke. Rylie Tritle also earned a win in the 200 butterfly for Waynesboro.
As for the boys dual meet, it was Waynesboro’s JB Bonner stealing the show with three wins in the 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke, and 200 IM. Waynesboro also got wins from Eli Harsh (50 freestyle) and Evan Forberger (100 butterfly). Chambersburg’s boys got wins from Patrick Breslin in the 100 backstroke and 200 breaststroke, while Jaxon Wagner conquered the 200 freestyle.
The dual meet also featured a co-ed division, which saw Chambersburg’s Madeline Himelfarb rattle off three wins in the 50 butterfly, 50 backstroke, and 100 IM.
Finally, on July 18-21, Chambersburg swimmers showcased their pool powers at the Middle Atlantic LCM Championships in Lancaster. Chambersburg’s Brett Boyer won the 100 breaststroke, while the girls were highlighted by three Top 5 finishes from Penny Richardson in the 50 backstroke (4th), 100 backstroke (5th), and 50 butterfly (5th).
Next up on the club swimming schedule is the YMCA National Long Course Championships, set to be held on Tuesday in Ocala, Fla.
