WAYNESBORO — Washington Township officials have implemented an immediate ban on all open burning within township limits, effective June 25, at noon. The decision, made by the Washington Township Supervisors, aims to enhance public safety and environmental protection.

The comprehensive ban prohibits any form of open burning, including brush burning, burn barrels, and fireplaces. Only gas grills and charcoal fires are permitted during this period. The Washington Township Fire Company will supervise any necessary exceptions within 150 feet of wooded areas or buildings.

Township Manager Vernon Ashway emphasized the importance of adhering to the ban to prevent potential fire hazards and ensure community safety. Residents are urged to comply with the regulations to avoid penalties and contribute to the township’s efforts in maintaining a safe environment.

The ban, enacted under Chapter 128 of the Township Code, comes as other municipalities in the region have taken similar precautions. Paradise Township recently instituted a burn ban, and Chambersburg is under a burn ban until at least July 22, 2024. Residents seeking more information on the open burning regulations can visit the Washington Township website or contact the township office directly. Officials remind the public that the ban will remain in effect until further notice.
