CHAMBERSBURG — The Chambersburg Police Department have issued a warning about an ongoing phone scam targeting local residents. The scammer is impersonating a police officer and attempting to extort money from victims.

On July 12, authorities were alerted to fraudulent calls made by an individual claiming to be Sgt. Ian Armstrong, a real member of the Chambersburg Police Department. The caller falsely informs residents that they have missed a court appearance and face charges, which can be avoided by sending money.

“The police department will never contact people requesting funds,” the Chambersburg Police Department stated in an official release. They emphasized that while Sgt. Armstrong is a genuine member of the force, he is not making these calls.

The scam attempts to exploit the authority of law enforcement to pressure victims into making hasty financial decisions. Residents are urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious calls immediately. Those who receive such calls are advised to contact the Chambersburg Police Department directly at 717-264-4131. The department’s headquarters is located at 116 S. Second Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
