Franklin County Visitors Bureau (FCVB) invites the public to join a celebration of Franklin County history on April 5, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Franklin County 11/30 Visitors Center, located on the square in downtown Chambersburg. FCVB will be highlighting Franklin County’s 70 Pennsylvania-designated sites of history and nationally designated historic districts in the downtowns of Chambersburg, Greencastle, Mercersburg, Shippensburg, and Waynesboro. Each year, the visitors bureau celebrates history during the month of April with Spring Into History activities and publications. In addition to a complimentary lunch, FCVB will share copies of the Spring Into History Booklet, Military Trail of History, and a selection of local walking and driving history tours.

April was an impactful month in America’s history. Key happenings include:

  1. April 19, 1775, is recognized as the first shots of the Revolutionary War.
  2. April 9, 1865, marks the surrender of Robert E. Lee.
  3. April 14, 1865, is the date of the first assassination of an American President—Abraham Lincoln.

FCVB will be sharing Franklin County connections to these events and others in a 20-minute presentation of History Happened Here.

Lunch of sandwiches, wraps, fruit, salad, and cookies will be topped off with “Franklin County History Bingo.” Each attendee will receive a Bingo card. Images of local history and landmarks will be displayed on a screen. As the image appears, players simply cover the name on their Bingo card. The visitors bureau will give smaller prizes for single Bingo and a larger prize for the first person to cover all locations on their Bingo card. Prizes feature local food, beverages, and locally crafted items.

Also on hand are local history sites and organizations, which will be displaying information about upcoming events as well as mixing and mingling with attendees. Explore history and enjoy Spring.
