When push comes to shove, there is no argument: The most coveted prize for a wrestler in Pennsylvania is a PIAA medal.
But if there’s one other award that grapplers desperately want to add to their trophy case, it’s the battle-ready metal helmet, finely smithed for each champion of the MyHouse Trojan Wars.
In its ninth year the Trojan Wars — hosted by Chambersburg — have quickly become a must-wrestle event for mat warriors looking to prove their mettle. The high school tournament drew more than 50 teams, while the middle school tourney brought in more than 30 squads.
We counted at least 61 area middle schoolers competing for that prized helmet, but only one of those athletes brought home the big hardware: Chambersburg’s Deakon Snavely. The Trojan wrestler conquered the 210-pound division and he made it look easy, posting four falls in four bouts, capping off his championship run with a win by fall in 4:19 over Warrior Run’s Blake Jones in the title match.
While Snavely was the only Local.News grappler to win a middle school title at the Trojan Wars, several other youth wrestlers found themselves topping the podium at the nearby Shippensburg Open.
Waynesboro’s Aven Beltz (Novice 6U, 40 pounds), Noah Swope (8U, 50), and Ace Beltz (8U, 60) all won championships at Shippensburg, as did Greencastle’s Brodie Piper (Novice 8U, 60), Landon Kendall (Novice 8U, 70), Kolston Piper (12U, 95), Silas Robertson (15U, 117), and Harper Duffey (Girls 10U, 60). Finally, Chambersburg crowned champions in Korbin Carbaugh (Novice 8U, 50), Ben Mayhugh (Novice 8U, 80), Abel Hight (10U, 85), Bryce Brady (10U, UNL), Piper Jones (12U, 135), Ireland Zubia (Girls 8U, 82), and Regan Evans (Girls 15U, 135).
