Pennsylvania is, without a doubt, the toughest wrestling state in the nation.
Penn State’s No. 1-ranked squad of grapplers proves this on a yearly basis, and the same can be said for the PIAA Wrestling Championships, which draw fans by the thousands to the Giant Center in Hershey.
There is no harder path to wrestling glory than the one that runs through the Keystone State. Just to become a competitive wrestler, not necessarily a star, in this state takes extensive drill work and dozens of matches of experience.
The best wrestlers compete early and often, and that is exactly the direction being taken by youth programs in the Local.News area this winter. Squads from Waynesboro, Greencastle, and Chambersburg have all been active on the dual and tournament scene, and sometimes those teams will butt heads even with each other.
That was the case in Adams County when all three teams met on the mat for the Season’s Beatings Tournament at Biglerville, and returned home with seven individual champions. Waynesboro crowned three champions in Aven Beltz (6U, 40 pounds), Noah Swope (8U, 50), and Ace Beltz (8U, 60), while Greencastle boasted three champs of its own in Liam Dietrich (10U, Unlimited), Kolston Piper (12U, 95), and Ethan Allen (12U, 110). Chambersburg’s Ezra Kump was also a champion in the 8U 70-pound division.
Five Greencastle youth wrestlers — Carson McAtee (6U), Carson Allen (6U), Seth Davis (10U), Brinx Bonillas (12U), Clay Thompson (12U) — captured titles at the Biglerville Novice Tournament, while three Chambersburg grapplers tangled for gold at the Cocalico Jr. High Tournament: Hunter Johnson (87 JV), Loudon Jones (155 B JV), and Leonidas Moore (190 JV).
