HAGERSTOWN, MD– University System of Maryland at Hagerstown (USMH) was awarded a $1,000 United Against Hunger Grant from the United Way of Washington County in support of USMH’s newly established student food pantry.

Wanting to alleviate the challenge some students may face with access to food, USMH established its food pantry earlier this fall to provide students with access to grab-and-go non-perishables. “With this grant, USMH will enhance its food pantry offerings to include healthy and fresh options for students with the purchase of a refrigerator and microwave,” said Bonnie Saunders, USMH student support coordinator.

Saunders added, “We appreciate the support of our community partner, The United Way, who, through this grant, helped expand our capacity to meet the needs of our students.”

Executive Director, Dr. Jacob Ashby shared, “USMH is excited to expand the newly established food pantry to support our students along their path to their academic goals. If students are struggling to meet their most basics needs, they cannot focus on learning.” Ashby added that the regional higher education center will continue to identify strategies to support our students and engage in the community.
