Slate of events at cemetery planned

A number of events are on tap for Saturday, Aug. 12, as the celebration to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro continues.

The day will kick off with a 5k Race on the cemetery grounds at 953 S. Potomac St. Registration begins at 8 a.m. along the Cemetery Avenue border of Green Hill. The race will begin around 8:30 a.m. near the cemetery’s pedestrian entrance at the corner of South Potomac Street and Cemetery Avenue. The race is open to runners of all ages. Online registration is available at Eventbrite.com

There will be a catered buffet picnic at noon. The cost is $25 per person and $45 per couple. For advance tickets (recommended) or more information, call 717-762-2759 or 717-658-6789 or visit the cemetery office from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Ice cream by Antietam Dairy (cash only) also will be available.

The Wayne Band will present a free concert from 1 to 2 p.m.

At 2 p.m., a portrait of Ferdinand S. Gilbert, longtime cemetery director and superintendent as well as a well-known topiary artist and civic worker, will be unveiled in the cemetery office.

Guided walking tours offered between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. will feature a portrayal of Gilbert by Emmalee Bechtel.
