YORK– WellSpan EMS and Penn State Health Life Lion have finalized an agreement to transition management of emergency medical services (EMS) in the Chambersburg area from Penn State Health to WellSpan Health, effective later this summer.

“With this acquisition, patients in need in the Chambersburg area will experience a seamless coordination of care from WellSpan from the moment 911 is activated all the way through the treatment they receive at our top-rated hospitals across Franklin County,” said Dr. Michael Seim, senior vice president and chief quality officer, WellSpan Health. “These essential emergency ambulance and patient transport services are key in providing that exceptional emergency care.”

As part of the agreement, team members of Penn State Health Life Lion in Chambersburg will be given the opportunity to join WellSpan EMS. The agreement will also include the transition of equipment and other assets of Penn State Health Life Lion in Chambersburg. Citizens who subscribe to the existing ambulance membership program will not be impacted. This membership program will be transferred to WellSpan EMS.

Penn State Health Life Lion has provided emergency medical services and ambulance services in Chambersburg and surrounding communities since December 2020 when the services transitioned from the West Shore Advanced Life Support (ALS) organization. Including its years as West Shore ALS, this division of Penn State Health Life Lion has provided emergency medical and ambulance services in Chambersburg for 25 years.

Regionally, WellSpan EMS recently expanded emergency services and patient transport to communities such as Manchester, Spring Grove, Waynesboro and Christiana, among others.
