CHAMBERSBURG- Members and volunteers for the Borough of Chambersburg Shade Tree Commission joined together for a celebratory tree planting in honor of Arbor Day.
For the 2023 celebration, members gathered at South Central Community Action Program at 533 South Main Street and undertook planting of 8 new trees along South Main Street and South Second Street. The Echo Warriors from Chambersburg Area Senior High School participated.
The Shade Tree Commission was established by Town Council and consists of five volunteer members who have exclusive custody and control of shade trees in the Borough, which are planted or growing on any public street right-of-way owned by the Borough. They also provide public education on tree care and planting.
Arbor Day, which literally translates to “tree” day from the Latin origin of the word arbor, is a holiday that celebrates the planting, upkeep and preservation of trees. For centuries, communities spanning the globe have found various ways to honor nature and the
environment.
The Borough of Chambersburg is a member of Tree City USA. The Tree City USA program has been greening-up cities and towns across America since 1976. It is a nationwide movement that provides the framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their public trees. More than 3,400 communities have made the commitment to becoming a Tree City USA.
