MILLERSVILLE – Shepherd (12-16-1, 7-10-1 PSAC East) dropped a doubleheader to 20th-ranked Millersville (29-8, 13-2 PSAC East) in PSAC East baseball action on Saturday. Millersville gained a 9-6 win in game one and held on for a 6-5 win in the nightcap.
Millersville scored three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth in game one to rally from a 6-1 deficit and take an 8-6 lead.
The Marauders added an insurance run in the seventh on a solo blast from Tommy Caulfield.
Senior catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland) and graduate student outfielder Daniel Keer (Lehighton/Marian Catholic) each belted solo homers and had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
Millersville took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap on a solo blast by Justin Taylor.
The Marauders added three in the fifth with a two-run single by Luke Trainer keying the rally.
Shepherd responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Senior catcher Andrew Edwards (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) and junior third baseman Ryan Haddaway (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) each had an RBI-single to highlight the scoring.
Junior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb) belted a solo home run in the eighth to tie the game.
Millersville plated two runs in the ninth on RBI-singles by Keegan Soltis and Trainer.
Shepherd rallied with a run in the ninth as sophomore designated player Peyton Mason (Knoxville, Md./Boonsboro/Wilson College) walked with the bases loaded to score sophomore pinch-runner Trey Sine (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg). The Rams had the bases loaded with one out but were unable to add additional runs.
The Rams return to action Friday when they host Lock Haven for a 2 p.m. game at Fairfax Field.
