CHAMBERSBURG—A food drive is underway—and you don’t even have to go out and purchase anything to help out.
The United Way of Franklin County’s Winter Food Drive is designed to collect food, books and hygiene items, as well monetary donations to support more than a dozen local food pantries, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to limit in-person interactions, this year’s drive is focused on collecting monetary donations, according to United Way officials.
By donating cash to the food drive, your dollar can go four times further because not only does it allow the pantries to buy in bulk at less-than-wholesale prices (and making it go to feed more families), each pantry may have different needs, so a cash donation allows them to buy exactly what they need.
Plus, it allows them to purchase perishables that can’t be donated in traditional food drives such as bread, milk, eggs and meats.
The Winter Food Drive continues through Jan. 31. You can donate online or by mailing a check to United Way of Franklin County, 182 S. Second St., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
