YORK—WellSpan Health has announced that, for the second year in a row, WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital has been named a Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers, widely acknowledged as the toughest standard-setters for health care safety and quality.

“To be named a Top Hospital by Leapfrog two years in a row shows just how dedicated this team is to keeping our patients safe,” said Melissa Dubrow, president, WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital and vice president, WellSpan Health. “The COVID-19 pandemic has really added another layer to the importance of safety in our hospital, and this recognition is well deserved for our staff. Each member of the WellSpan team is dedicated to providing the safest and best care to our patients.”

The Leapfrog Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive awards American hospitals can receive. Over 2,200 hospitals were considered for the award, with 149 nationwide being selected as Top Hospitals in the categories of children’s hospitals, general hospitals, rural hospitals, and teaching hospitals.

Hospitals surveyed by Leapfrog annually are considered Top Hospitals if they are deemed to have better systems in place to prevent medication errors and lower infection rates. Hospitals must also have received an A in the most recent Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades in order to be eligible for the Top Hospital designation.

“We are pleased to recognize WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital as a Top Hospital this year,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Even with the continued strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital has demonstrated an extraordinary dedication to excellent health care in the central Pennsylvania community. We congratulate the board, leadership, staff and clinicians who put their patients first.”

To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety.

Physicians and providers at WellSpan Waynesboro hospital help educate residents, medical students, nurse practitioner students and physician assistant students, with clinical affiliations with Penn State College of Medicine, Drexel University College of Medicine, West Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and several other colleges.

WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital was named a Top Teaching hospital in 2020 as well.
