Waynesboro’s youth wrestling squad was a bit undermanned when it took on the Cedar Cliff Duals last weekend.
Coach Brandon Beltz’ grapplers were giving up three forfeits in every match, but that didn’t stop the Tribe from believing they could win.
Using a total team effort, as well as two match-clinching victories from heavyweight Griff Alexander, Waynesboro exceeded expectations with a third-place finish.
“This was one of the most exciting days I’ve been a part of with our youth program and hopefully one our wrestlers never forget,” Beltz said on Waynesboro’s team page on Facebook. “The grind is tough, but the future is bright.”
Waynesboro was also active at the Shippensburg Open, as was Greencastle-Antrim and Chambersburg.
The Tribe crowned four champions — Amaree Knott (6U Novice), Byron Mummert (8U Novice), James Bitzer (8U Novice), and Eli Hind (15U) — while the Blue Devils got titles from Rhys Mason (8U Novice) and Alayna McAtee (10U Girls). Chambersburg’s Gabriel Creamer was a 12U champ.
