This is the philosophy that’s fueled the Waynesboro youth wrestling squad this season. And after months of grinding, coach Brandon Beltz’ grapplers were finally able to harvest the fruits of their labor at last weekend’s Central Pennsylvania Wrestling Association Open/Girls Championship, hosted by CD East.
The Tribe had a brilliant showing at the Open, with the team sending nine wrestlers to awards stand, and led all squads in attendance by crowning three champions: Noah Swope (60), Ace Beltz (66), and Griffin Alexander (201). Waynesboro also got Top 8 finishes from Freedom Young (2nd at 72), Aven Belt (3rd at 48), Brixton Hollimon (5th at 76), Luke Swope (7th at 48), Christopher Curry (7th at 151), and Issac Fann (8th at 63).
Ace Beltz, a two-time champion, was named the Open’s Outstanding Wrestler.
Chambersburg sent 13 wrestlers to the medal stand at the Open, including a pair of champs in Frankie Bryan (84) and Gabe Creamer (116). Other Trojans on the medal stand included Abel Hight (2nd at 96), Xavier Rivera (4th at 131), Ben Mayhugh (4th at 116), Sam Stoner (5th at 151), Brechtlee Holmquist (5th at 48), Colt Bryan (5th at 57), Ezra Harbaugh (6th at 116), Brodie Johnson (7th at 63), Landon Johnson (8th at 54), Knox Bryan (8th at 76), and David Taylor Stoner (8th at 131).
The CPWA Girls tourney also included strong performances from Waynesboro and Chambersburg. For the Maidens, Emma Swope captured the title at 65-70 pounds, to lead a group of ‘Boro grapplers that included Addi Warnick (2nd at 98-103), Aleeah Fann (3rd at 36-43), Mariah Davis (3rd at 103-108), and Peighton Warnick (4th at 65-70). As for the Trojans, they got a title from Ireland Zubia at 82-86 pounds, as well as Top 4 finishes from Bellany Huntoon (2nd at 103-108), Elynn Warner (3rd at 72-75), Aria Martin (149-167), and Elliot Smith (77-80).
Cumberland Valley hosted the Wrestle for the Ring tourney last weekend. Chambersburg crowned two champions in Knox Bryan (Intermediate Open) and Frankie Bryan (Intermediate Open), while Waynesboro’s Amaree Knott captured a title in the Bantam Novice division. Fairfield got a pair of runner-up finishes from Storm Smith (Bantam Novice) and Carlee Miller (Girls).
Finally, the Greencastle-Antrim middle school wrestling squad hosted the Devils Den Duals and took second place.
