More than two dozen local youth and junior high wrestlers, 27 to be exact, will be headed to the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Championships.
Grapplers from the Local.News1 coverage area earned that right at last weekend’s Area IX Qualifier, hosted by Gettysburg High School. Chambersburg led the way by pushing 14 to states, including six champions in Mirra Harbaugh (JH Girls 164), Nolan Lobb (Boys 12U 125), Gabriel Creamer (Boys 12U 115), Samuel Stoner (Boys 10U 135), Ezra Kump (Boys 10U 90) and Brechtlee Holmquist (Boys 8U 50).
Waynesboro will be sending seven wrestlers to states, including three Area IX champs in Aven Beltz (Girls 8U 45), Emma Swope (Girls 12U 72) and Ace Beltz (Boys 10U 65). Greencastle-Antrim got a Girls 12U championship from Harper Duffey in the 84-pound bracket. Duffey leads a group of seven Blue Devils who punched their tickets to states.
Fairfield had no state qualifiers but got medalist finishes from Carlee Miller (3rd at Girls 8U 57), Lainey Miller (3rd at Girls 10U 78) and John Packard (4th at JH 140).
Two other tournaments in State College — the Nittany Lion and BTC PA Novice & First Year tourneys — drew the attention of area grapplers. Waynesboro’s Ava Baker finished second at 105 pounds in the Girls 9-10 division at the Nittany Lion tourney, while Chambersburg’s Abel Smith won a 12U Boys Novice title at the BTC event.
