With a new ride, Kuhn surges to victory at Path Valley Speedway

Photo courtesy of MBK Motorsports Greencastle’s Bradyn Kuhn celebrates from Victory Lane after winning the 270 Sprints feature at Path Valley on Saturday night.

Bradyn Kuhn gave everything he had on Friday night at Path Valley Speedway, but the Greencastle 270 Sprints driver was let down by his new ride, which was seeing action in just its second race of the summer.

One day later — after hours of having its engine rebuilt — Kuhn’s car repaid him in full, and with interest, with a win at Path Valley. The victory, worth $500, was Kuhn’s third of the season.

It was a happy ending to a story that began with a nervewracking twist. Everything was going right for Kuhn on Friday when he set fast time in qualifying and built a comfortable lead over some tough competition in his heat race, but that all changed when an engine cylinder broke. The malfunction, called a “catastrophic failure” by the MBK Motorsports team, put Kuhn and his squad in a tough spot.

With very little time to work after being forced to the consolation race, Kuhn’s team changed out the engine just as the rest of the cars were taking the green flag. Kuhn was a half track behind by the time he got started, but he blasted off for victory in the B-Main to earn the 22nd-starting spot in the feature. From there, he zoomed up 13 spots to take ninth, earn the Hard Charger Award, and set the tone for the next day.

Saturday wasn’t nearly as stressful for Kuhn. He zipped to Victory Lane over Zach Glass, of Fort Loudon, and Teegan Kauffman. On Facebook, the MBK Motorsports team commented on their car, “We’re starting to figure it out and find some good speed with it.”

Kuhn wasn’t the only local standout from a busy weekend at Path Valley.

Friday’s program saw Thunder Cars driver Cameron Defenderfer, of Fayetteville, take second in the Butch Shatzer Memorial makeup race. He was chased by Chambersburg’s Rodney Walls (3rd) and Kevin Bard (6th), and Fayetteville’s Roger Traxler (8th). Another Butch Shatzer makeup race saw Greencastle’s Transtan Stoner roll to a third-place finish in a Wingless Super Sportsman race.

The regularly-scheduled race program on Friday saw Defenderfer and Bard finish third and fifth, respectively, in the Thunder Cars, with Fayetteville’s Cory Myers taking fourth in the 270 Sprints.

Saturday’s program at Path Valley featured several Top 10 finishes from drivers in the Local.News1 coverage area. Stoner posted a third-place finish in the Wingless Super Sportsman feature for the second night in a row, while Gunner Walls took second in the Limited Late Models race and was followed by fellow St. Thomas driver Michael Walls, who took ninth. The Thunder Cars feature was highlighted by top finishes from Greencastle’s Parker Starr (3rd) and Bard (4th).

Hagerstown Speedway hosted the Frank Sagi Tribute on Saturday, with Greencastle’s Gary Stuhler winning the Super Late Models B-Main. He went on to finish 22nd in the feature.

Below is a track-by-track, feature-by-feature look at races from last weekend that included drivers from the Local.News1 coverage area:
