WAYNESBORO – It’s still football season, but it’s also getting into the heart of October. And that means it’s getting close to tryouts for the Waynesboro Pride Travel Basketball Team.
Organized by Waynesboro boys’ junior varsity head coach and varsity assistant coach Richie Davis, the Pride will hold its 2025-26 tryouts on Friday, Oct. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Waynesboro Area Senior High School gymnasium, located on East Second Street.
“(Waynesboro Area Senior High School boys’ varsity basketball head coach) Tom Hoffman and I run the tryout and select the teams,” said Davis. “We are looking for basic skills as well as athletic kids.
“When time allows (not conflicted with the high school), we also occasionally attend practices to help out. I also try to take care of the administrative stuff for coaches (signing up for leagues as an example).”
While the tryouts are at 6, parents and players are being told to arrive by 5:30 p.m. There will be a parent meeting at 5:45. Parents are instructed to park and enter the gym from the back of the school.
“The teams allow kids to practice at least two times during the week, mainly working on skills that will help them in the future,” Davis explained. “They usually play between 10 and 20 games during the season. We typically play in a league in Mechanicsburg or Gettysburg and then maybe one or two local tournaments towards the end of the season.
“While we always like to win, the purpose is to expose them to fundamentals on a regular basis that they may not otherwise get and make them aware of the type of competition they face in the future.”
Waynesboro has one team for fourth, fifth and sixth-grade teams.
Readers may pre-register with the student’s name, grade, school, parent/guardian name(s) and phone number(s) by contacting Richie Davis at [email protected] or 717-765-0426.
There is no charge for the tryout. For additional information, readers may visit www.washsathletics.org or www.leaguelineup.com/wbopride.
