HARRISBURG – Waynesboro Area Senior High School golfers Tyler Fortney and Evan Stein represented their school well on Tuesday at the 2022 Mid-Penn Conference Championships at Dauphin Highlands Golf Course.
Playing for a team that won its fourth consecutive Mid-Penn Colonial Division title, Fortney placed second overall with a 1-over-par 73. Fortney was in first place at the end of the tournament on the par-72, 7,212-yard 4 Star rated course.
“He played in a two-man playoff and wound up losing on the second hole,” said Waynesboro coach Ryan Henderson. “He lost to a senior, and Tyler, only being a sophomore, will certainly have another chance over the next couple years.
“Tyler played great all day, and this will be a great experience for him moving forward. He will likely be laser-focused for the (District 3) championship.”
Lower Dauphin’s Chase Smith, by virtue of winning the playoff, was this year’s conference titlist.
Stein finished in a two-way three-way tie for fourth place with Central Dauphin’s Grant Novinger and Joey Sembrot, with identical scores of 76.
“I’m very proud of how Evan kept his game in check,” said Henderson. “This was his last shot at making it past this step and he succeeded. It was a great day for him.”
Stein carded two birdies and 11 pars in the tournament. He also shot four bogeys and one double bogey that brought his score down.
Fortney recorded two birdies and 13 pars, along with three bogeys.
Waynesboro placed third as a team behind Central Dauphin and Cumberland Valley. Waynesboro finished with a score of 332, while CD won with 322 and CV was second with 329.
Fortney and Stein will compete in the District 3 championships on Oct. 7 and 8 at Briarwood East Golf Course in York.
