NEWVILLE – The Waynesboro varsity wrestling team made the trip to Big Spring High School on Thursday and came away with a 43-28 victory in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division meet.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an 18-0 lead thanks to back-to-back forfeits at 107 and 114 pounds and a first-period pin at 121 pounds.
But the Indians came storming back to win five straight bouts and eight of the final 10 matches to notch the win.
Steven Howard started the rally when he registered a pin with 19 seconds left in the 127-pound match. Colin Young followed with a 6-3 decision at 133 pounds, and Jayden Rooney recorded a fall in 1:16 at 139 pounds.
Waynesboro’s Calvin Myers won by fall on 4:33 in the 145-pound bout to give the Tribe a 21-18 lead. Then, Tyler Rooney earned a 10-0 major decision at 152 pounds to make it 25-18.
Big Spring made it 25-22 with a major decision at 160 pounds, but Waynesboro was quick to respond as the Indians won the next three matches by fall. Titus Mong pinned his opponent in 10 seconds, while Brady Mansfield (189) needed just 50 seconds and Caden Shockey (215) won by fall in 2:45.
Due to wintry weather, the Grizzly Duals in Elizabethtown on Saturday was canceled.
Waynesboro’s next meet is a dual contest at home against James Buchanan on Thursday, Jan. 11.
