WAYNESBORO – It’s the fall sports season at Waynesboro Area Senior High School, and that means it’s time for another season of golf.
Waynesboro, coached by Ryan Henderson, has had its share of success in the past decade. But the past two seasons have seen the rise if Northern York after Waynesboro dominated the previous four seasons.
Henderson has adjusted his expectations – not to be unexpected after losing one of the best standouts in recent memory in Tyler Fortney.
Fortney consistently shot in the low to mid-70s and the top four shot in the 320s which was good enough for first place in most meets.
“I hope to finish just above the middle of the pack this year,” Henderson said. “We likely will not be contending for a (Colonial Division) championship. We have lots of great players, just not quite as good as we need to be to compete at the top.”
Henderson will be counting on juniors Rylan Nichols and Abby Byers to lead the way.
“Rylan has a great swing, and he’s very athletic. He will be a team contributor this season,” Henderson said. “Abby made it to day two of the District 3 Championships last season. Hopefully, she can break 80 this season.”
Two more juniors – Caiden Shacreaw and Landon Crable – should be bright spots for the season.
“Both went to the MPC qualifier last year,” Henderson said. “I’ve seen some improvements in their game this season so far.”
