Waynesboro to host District 3-5A first-round playoff game

WAYNESBORO -The Waynesboro Indians varsity football team will host Daniel Boone on Friday night, Nov. 5, in a District 3-5A first-round playoff game.

Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. at Buchanan Auto Park Stadium. All tickets are $6 and no parent passes will be honored. Kindergarten through eighth-grade students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Daniel Boone is 5-3 and competes in the Berks Inter-County Division I.

“These kids are battle tested,” said Waynesboro head coach Josh Sprenkle, whose team won its final five games and finished the regular season with an 8-2 record and second in the Mid-Penn Colonial Division behind Shippensburg. “From the triple OT game at Gettysburg to the Hail Mary on Senior Night, these kids don’t quit.”

The Indians defeated fellow playoff team Gettysburg 55-49 in Gettysburg on Sept. 9. In the penultimate regular-season game against Mechanicsburg, Waynesboro marched 84 yards with a minute to play, capped by an electrifying Hail Mary pass from quarterback Louie Lindsay to Brody Rhodes with 0.6 seconds remaining. Aiden Mencia ran for the two-point conversion to give the Indians the 21-20 win.

“We are undersized in every game but we wear teams out. We play solid defense and play physical on both sides.”

There are 14 teams in the Class 5A tournament. Waynesboro enters the playoffs as the fifth seed, which earned the Tribe its second home playoff game. Waynesboro hosted Solanco in 2018.

Waynesboro’s two losses came against higher-ranked teams – Spring Grove and Shippensburg. Shippensburg and Spring Grove are seeded third and fourth, respectively.

“This week we will work to take away the run game of Daniel Boone,” Sprenkle said. “We will play physical and fast. They haven’t played since October 15th because of COVID, so I don’t know if that means they’re well-rested or rusty. But we are ready.”

Undefeated Governor Mifflin (7-0) is the top seed, followed by Manheim Central (9-1) at No. 2.
