Waynesboro rally falls short as Maidens lose 48-45

WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Maidens upended the Shippensburg Lady Greyhounds 46-40 back on Dec. 18 in the ‘Burg.

On Friday, Jan. 23, Waynesboro and Shippensburg played in the third game of four of Pack the House Night inside a loud and energetic Waynesboro Area Senior High School gymnasium.

With the pep band playing in the background and students from Fairview, Hooverville, Mowrey, and Summitview Elementary schools sounding off when the home team scored, the Maidens did their best to give the boys and girls a win.

Maybe they tried too hard. Or maybe the Greyhounds played their best game of the season.

Whatever the case, while the Maidens did take a 7-6 lead when Braelyn Pearson-Moore made the back end of two-shot foul shots after being fouled in the act of shooting, 7-6, Shippensburg took full advantage of missed shots and turnovers to forge a 25-12 lead at halftime.

A 10-0 run spanning the first quarter and second quarter helped Shippensburg pull away. A three-point field goal by Charlotte Rhodes helped stop the bleeding, making the score 16-10. Ship’s Lily Weller, who was a dominant force throughout the first half, made a field goal to bring it to 18-10. After Waynesboro’s Kayla Hedin made two foul shots to make it 18-12 – a manageable deficit – the Greyhounds tallied the final seven points to take a 25-12 lead at the intermission.

At the start of the third quarter, Waynesboro’s goal was, besides catching up entirely, at least getting the deficit to single digits. Instead, Shippensburg extended the advantage to 16 points at 34-18 about midway through the third period. It was 36-22 when the Maidens scored eight In a row, only to see the Greyhounds hit a three-pointer to take a 39-30 lead.

Hedin started the mini scoring spree, and Breanna McIlquham added a field goal. Hedin connected on a field goal to end the third quarter. Maddie Nystrom capped the run with a two-pointer to make the score 36-30.

Somehow, Waynesboro got to within four points, 38-34 on a bucket by Hedin. But, aside from pulling to within 44-41 on a field goal by Pearson-Moore, the Maidens just couldn’t get over the proverbial hump.

Waynesboro will try for its seventh win of the season on Monday when the Maidens host Gettysburg. Waynesboro defeated the Warriors In Gettysburg on Dec. 22 by the score of 63-45.
