WAYNESBORO– On Thursday night, Aug. 28 the Waynesboro Maidens Junior Varsity and Varsity volleyball teams hosted the Gettysburg Warriors in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
The Junior Varsity teams took to the court first and the Maidens took an early lead in game one scoring five unanswered points. But the lead wouldn’t last as the Warriors rallied back and the two teams exchanged long volleys that kept the crowd in anticipation. As the teams reached the first one-minute timeout the Maidens had a slight edge leading 20-18.
Gettysburg came out strong after the time out and scored four quick points. The Maidens did their best to fight back and despite a strong showing they lost the first game 22-25.
The second game of the best of three series was just as exciting as both teams exchanged serves back and forth with neither getting the upper hand for long. The game stayed close as the two tough teams volleyed for position and soon they were tied 24-24. Tension was in the air as the crowd held their breath with every shot. The Maidens proved to be resilient and scored the needed two points to win game two, 26-24.
The crowd was fired up as game three began. The teams had split the series and the Maidens came out fast quickly building up a 5-1 lead. The Gettysburg junior varsity played hard and put up a fight, but the Maidens were up to the task and won game three and the series with a 15-11 score.

After a short intermission, the varsity teams came out to a thunderous ovation. Both teams were well represented by fans and the excitement in the air could be felt as the game began. The home team was at the top of their game and quickly established a large lead at one point leading 16-9. While the points earned were not easy with long rallies between both sides, the ball just seemed to land in the Maidens favor and they won game one 25-11.
The home crowd had a lot to cheer for as the teams began game two. The Maidens picked up where they had left off and quickly racked a five-point lead. The visiting team put on a wonderful showing for the crowd but was unable to break the lead and would lose game two of the five game series, 25-18.
The momentum that the Waynesboro varsity team had built from the first two games would lead them into game three with a purpose. That purpose was a clean sweep. They played hard and again built a big lead that the Warriors just couldn’t come back from. With the crowd on their feet, the Maidens finished off game three with a 25-10 win.
