Waynesboro Indians, Maidens sweep Shippensburg

WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro boys’ and girls’ track and field teams hosted the always-strong Shippensburg team on Thursday, April 3.

The Indians and Maidens undoubtedly wanted to leave it all on the track and in the field, as they would not compete again until Saturday, April 12. They did just that.

The Maidens won comfortably, 83-65. Jaeda Dockman won two individual events and ran a leg on the winning 400 relay along with Alie Briegel, Caroline Bercaw, and Natalia Anderson. Dockman took first in the high jump (5-feet even) and the long jump (19-6 ½).

Breanna McIlquham won the 100 hurdles in 16.5 seconds and placed second in the 300 hurdles.

Morgan Price won both the 1600 run (5:49.8) and the 3200 (12:43.7). Briegel added an individual first place in the 100 dash (13.5 seconds), and Maddie Ruefle won the 800 run (2:40.2).

The Maidens are 3-0, having also won against Boiling Springs (84-66) and Big Spring (98-52).

Bonner won the pole vault with a winning vault of 9-6.

The Indians edged the Greyhounds 75.5-74.4. It came down to the 100-meter dash. Waynesboro’s Julian Mencia won the event with a time of 11.4 seconds, six-tenths of a second ahead of the second-place time. After reviewing the times with the official timers, it was determined that there was a tie for second place, which differed from the original times. Waynesboro’s Rayshawn Frazer-Hewitt shared the runner-up spot and received 1.5 points.

Mencia’s short-distance teammate Ayden Strausbaugh secured another crucial first-place finish when he won the 400 dash with a time of 54.7 seconds. Then came another big win as the group of Keyan Mobley, Alex Williams, Hayden Nola, and Frazer-Hewitt blistered the track with a time of 45.2 seconds.

Still on the track, Gabe Blake gave Waynesboro five more points by winning the 300 hurdles in 43.5 seconds.

Mencia added his second victory in the 800 run (twice around the track), which is essentially an extended sprint. He finished in 2:09.4 seconds.

Waynesboro picked up perhaps its most pivotal win in the 1600 relay, in which each runner has a turn of one lap but in an all-out sprint. The Indians won with a time of 3:39.8.

Nolan earned an individual win in the pole vault with a winning vault of 11-feet, 6 inches.

Ben Williams accounted for 11 team points as he won the shot put (47-8 ¾) and the javelin throw (147-5). He was third in the discus throw.

The win gives the Indians a 3-0 record. Waynesboro defeated Boiling Springs 86-64 and Big Spring 94-52.
