It only gets more difficult.
Following Waynesboro’s four-set win against the Chambersburg Trojans in the first round of the District 3-6A volleyball playoffs on Tuesday, Oct. 27, the No. 8-seeded Maidens will travel to face No. 1 Wilson West Lawn in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Waynesboro has played two Class 6A teams that are seeded higher: No. 3 Southwestern and No. 6 Central Dauphin. Both were losses, but that was early in the season when Waynesboro lost its first two matches to Southwestern and Class 5A fourth-seed Spring Grove. After winning three straight matches, the Maidens lost three in a row, including to Central Dauphin.
Wilson (19-1) has won 15 matches in straight sets. The Bulldogs also have victories against Class 5A top seed Exeter Township (3-0 and 3-2) and 12th seed Governor Mifflin (3-0 and 3-0). Class 5A Twin Valley and Daniel Boone also lost to Wilson.
“It will be a learning experience,” Waynesboro head coach Emily Nystrom said. “I’m going to watch some film and figure out my rotation. People can watch as much film they want on us. I’ve changed the lineup almost every single time, and that’s a credit to the girls that they can be that versatile. Whatever I’ve asked of them, they’ve risen to the occasion and done it.”
The Bulldogs then competed in the Berks County Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament, where they defeated Twin Valley 3-1 and then lost to Exeter Township 3-1.
Wilson has been a constant when it comes to its competitiveness in girls volleyball. Last season, the Bulldogs won the conference tournament with a 3-0 win over Exeter Township. Wilson went on to win the District 3-4A tournament, defeating Hempfield in five sets. The Bulldogs lost to Garnet Valley in the first round of the PIAA championships.
