WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Indians varsity basketball team continued its winning ways in the Mid-Penn Colonial Division on Friday night with a long-awaited matchup against Shippensburg in the wings the following day.
Waynesboro jumped out to a 23-10 lead after the first quarter and never looked back en route to a 62-37 triumph over West Perry for the Tribe’s 12th win against only two losses.
The Mustangs kept the game close in the second quarter, being outscored 11-10. However, Waynesboro won the third period 18-4 to take a 52-24 lead going into the final stanza.
Waynesboro’s top three scorers during the season combined to score 35 points. Jaylon Bean finished with 15 points, followed by Reese Cover and Ryan Shaffer with 10 points apiece.
Blake Carbaugh added eight points, and Rhyan Day had seven points.
Bean and Cover each recorded six rebounds, while Shaffer had five assists.
On Saturday, the Indians saw their six-game winning streak come to a halt as Shippensburg registered a 63-54 victory on its home court.
Waynesboro led 13-12 after the first quarter, and it was 28-25 in favor of Shippensburg at halftime.
The Greyhounds used an 18-8 surge in the third quarter to put some distance between the two teams, leading 46-33 entering the fourth quarter.
Michael Young paced the Tribe’s scoring effort with 15 points. Cover and Bean each tallied nine points, while Shaffer had eight points and Louie Lindsay scored seven points.
Waynesboro hosts Northern York on Tuesday for its next game. Junior varsity tips off at 6 p.m., followed by varsity around 7:30.
