It wasn’t the easiest season on the United Recreational Soccer League pitch for coach Stephen Webb’s seventh- and eighth-grade girls squad. Webb’s Leopards, a Smithsburg Youth Athletics club, won just one game this spring and gave up more than twice as many goals as they scored.
But when Webb’s girls took the field for URSL’s end-of-season tournament, they couldn’t be beaten.
Competing in the 78-11 Thompson bracket, the Leopards opened pool play with wins over Francis Scott Key Gronaw (2-0) and Mount Airy Youth Athlethic Association Booth (2-1) before forging a 2-2 draw with the Potomac Valley Youth Association Terps. Smithsburg then found itself in a rematch with PVYA in the championship game, and prevailed by a 4-2 score.
Another SYA squad, Leopards Lingg Purple, earned second at the URSL tourney, as did the Waynesboro Warriors. Two local squads — the Waynesboro Maidens and SYA Leopards Koontz — each won United Recreational Soccer League division titles this spring.
United Soccer Club, based in Chambersburg, saw four of its teams nail down Central Pennsylvania Youth Soccer League division titles. The U13 girls Eclipse won their division, as did three USC boys teams: The U11 Vikings, U12 United, and U12 Gladiators.
Greencastle United Soccer Club crowned a Central Pennsylvania Youth Soccer League champion of its own in the U10 boys Strykers.
