For decades, South Hagerstown’s school record for the 4×400 relay seemed untouchable. But then the Rebels did the impossible over the spring, breaking the record that had stood for 37 years.
Just 37 days later, the speedsters on the South Hagerstown relay decided that record wasn’t enough.
Competing at the Adidas Track and Field Nationals at North Carolina A&T State University, the Rebels quartet — Clinton Otinkorang, Torin Sitter, Felix Annan, and Cassius Freeman — struck once again, clocking a time of 3:24.61 to place 11th in the “National Elite” field. That time not only crushed South Hagerstown’s school record by nearly two seconds, it also broke the Washington County record of 3:24.99 established by North Hagerstown last spring.
The Rebels also got Top 15 finishes from their 4×100 relay (13th in 43.68) and Chloe Gietka (15th in 34-7).
In Philadelphia, the New Balance Outdoor Nationals drew the attention of several Franklin County athletes, including Chambersburg’s Brycen Purvis, who secured a ninth-place finish in the freshman long jump with a leap of 20-8.
The club track scene is also heating up. The H-Town Rollerz, based in Hagerstown, put on a solid show at the AAU Region 2 Qualifier, hosted by Millersville University. Khanya White, a competitor in the boys 12-year-old division, won the 100 (12.42), took second in the 200 (25.90), and placed fifth in the 400 (1:01.44). Jurnee Simms ran in the 10-year-old division and logged runner-up finishes in the 100 (14.07), 200 (29.47), and 400 (1:05.79).
