CARISLE – The Mid-Penn Colonial Division tour visited Eagles Crossing on Wednesday, and Shippensburg and Northern continued their separation from the other five league teams but not each other.
Shippensburg dominated everyone, including the Polar Bears. The Greyhounds finished with a team score of 326, a solid 11 strokes better than Northern. The loss handed Shippensburg sole possession of first place with a 23-7 record through five matches, with two remaining.
It’ll be Shippensburg hosting the next league meet on Sept. 9 at Chambersburg Country Club. The final match is two days later at Gettysburg National.
Greencastle-Antrim came close to displacing Northern from second place but finished two strokes behind with 339.
Waynesboro was a distant sixth place, despite a sparkling round of golf by Caiden Shacreaw. Shacreaw tied James Buchanan’s Abram Stock for second overall with 79.
“Caiden had a great round,” said Waynesboro coach Ryan Henderson. “For him to break 80 at Eagles Crossing, it’s pretty special. The pins were in very difficult locations and the greens were tough to putt on as well. I’m very happy for Caiden and his performance.”
The drop off after Shacreaw was significant. In fact, Waynesboro finished a single stroke ahead of last place Big Spring (362-363). But Henderson, before the first match was held, was expecting a rebuilding season, noting that he wanted to see improvement during the season for a team that is expected to return all its golfers.
A big reason for Shippensburg’s win was the play of Ben Horgos. He was the top finisher with a 1-over par 73, eight strokes ahead of Northern’s top finisher Garrett Mainhart (81).
