Mid-Penn Conference Spring All-Stars released, includes 30 area selections

The Mid-Penn Conference announced its all-star teams for the spring sports season last week, and 30 athletes from the Local.News1.org coverage area were honored.

Not surprisingly, nearly half of those selections come from the softball teams at Greencastle-Antrim and Chambersburg, two top-tier programs that qualified for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Championships this spring.

The Blue Devils, who are set to play in the 5A state semifinals on Monday, were highlighted by Mark DeCarli’s selection as the Colonial Division’s Coach of the Year. Under the guidance of DeCarli Greencastle (21-3) won all but one of its division games, took third at the District 3 tourney, and have rolled up two wins at states over Marple Newton (9-1) and North Pocono (3-0).

DeCarli is joined by First Teamers Caroline Logsdon, Meadow Gambacurta, and Kiersten Swain. Zhen Reuter and Kaidyn Zimmerman were named to Second Team, while Kindal Rice landed on the Third Team. Seniors Logsdon and Gambacurta are both batting well over .400 and have combined for 29 extra-base hits and 64 RBI this season. Swain, a sophomore pitcher, has compiled 12 wins this season to go along with a 1.45 ERA. She’s struck out 116 batters over 82 1/3 innings of work.

Chambersburg, which just saw it season end with a loss in the 6A state quarterfinals, landed two Commonwealth Division First Team All-Stars in Bree Paetow and Karley Skultety, with Kori Leedy and Addison Gsell earning spots on the Second Team. Malia Cramer and Kylee Perry were honored as Third Teamers. Paetow was a contender for Player of the Year, as the junior hit safely in every game this season on her way to a .576 batting average (53 for 92). Paetow also led locals in runs (44) and stolen bases (30). Skultety, a senior, batted .370 and was among area leaders in runs (22), RBI (28), and home runs (4).

Chambersburg had seven other athletes in different sports named All-Stars, including Ryne Mills (2nd Team) in baseball, Quinn Makosy (2nd Team) and Ryan Cosey (2nd Team) in boys lacrosse, Brynn Sekel (3rd Team) and Reagan Barrett (3rd Team) in girls lacrosse, and Yazaan Safi (3rd Team) and Luke Dortenzo (3rd Team) in boys volleyball.

Greencastle baseball player Carter McCauley was named a First Teamer, while teammates Elvin Robles and Nolan Sullivan earned Second Team selections.

Finally, Waynesboro was represented with seven All-Stars. The Tribe baseball squad was highlighted by the selection of John Kahl to the First Team, while teammates Riley Eaton (2nd Team) and Bryan Benedict (3rd Team) were also honored. Waynesboro’s softball team had a First Team selection in Emma Bradley, while Lydia Shank (2nd Team), Riley Shetler (3rd Team), and Haley Reynolds (3rd Team) were also named All-Stars.
