Match of the Week: Trojans set to take on unbeaten Wilson

Even without the services of four graduated All-Stars, the Chambersburg girls volleyball team has still found a way to get out to a winning start this season.

But what the Trojans would really like to have is the same thing they had in 2024: A spot in the District 3-4A postseason.

With eight matches remaining in the regular season, Chambersburg is fighting for its playoff life. The Trojans rank No. 17 in the district playoff rankings, and will need to make some headway down the stretch if they hope to qualify for the 16-team postseason.

Every match is an opportunity to move up the ladder for Chambersburg, with perhaps the biggest chance coming on Saturday, when the Trojans welcome undefeated Wilson to the friendly confines of Franklin County. We’ve selected this high-powered clash as our Match of the Week.

The Bulldogs have beaten up on every opponent they’ve faced this season and seem well on their way to a fourth appearance in the district championship game over the last six years. Expect some resistance from a Chambersburg side that boasts a powerful front line and has won three of its last four matches.

In the weeks and months to come throughout the high school sports season, we plan on spotlighting multiple teams and sports with our Match of the Week. Any big upcoming games or matches we should know about? Send suggestions to Andy Sandrik via email at [email protected].

Wilson at Chambersburg

Tip-off: Saturday, 10 a.m., at Chambersburg

Records: Chambersburg is 7-5, while the Bulldogs come in at 13-0

Last match: The Trojans fell 3-0 to Central Dauphin, while Wilson is coming off a 3-0 victory over Twin Valley

Last meeting: Chambersburg topped the Bulldogs, 3-2, in last year’s matchup.

Meet the Bulldogs: Wilson, one of just five unbeaten teams remaining in all of District 3, checks in at No. 2 in the latest Class 4A power rankings behind Hempfield … The Bulldogs, a team that has lost only two sets this season, are powered by a lethal group of Berks County All-Stars … Leading the way for Wilson is Keira Benner, a 5-foot-9 outside hitter who was named All-State and All-County last seeason … Middle hitter Aicha Kann was also an All-County selection last fall, while defensive specialist Ashlan Moyer was an All-Division player … Senior setter Clara Conner, a Messiah commit, was picked All-Division Honorable Mention, as were her teammates Ava Legath and Naveah Paye … Wilson has been one of the most dominant teams of the half-decade, with the Bulldogs finishing as district runner-up in 2020, 2022, and 2023 … The Bulldogs’ playoff aspirations were dashed last season when they were bumped out of districts by Hempfield in the quarterfinal round.

Meet the Trojans: Guided by Ty Frelin, the 2024 Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division Coach of the Year, Chambersburg is off to a winning start this fall and is once again battling for a spot in the District 3 postseason … The Trojans, who check in at No. 17 in the lastest Class 4A power rankings, are aiming to make the 16-team field once again after earning the No. 3-seed last fall … Senior Ava Zeigler, a 5-foot-7 setter, was named to the Commonwealth Second Team last year and has totaled 368 assists, 121 digs, and 20 aces this season … Zeigler has several capable hitters to look for on the front line, including a trio of 6-footers in Olivia Shearer, Nizaya Hawkins, and Riley Cramer, three players who have combined for more than 200 kills and 125 blocks … Chambersburg’s top offensive option has been the 5-foot-10 Kasey Moser, a senior who has piled up 130 kills and 163 digs … The Trojans’ most notable win this fall came over Spring Grove (8-5), the No. 15-team in the district rankings.

Sandrik’s pick: Wilson by 3.
