Maidens beat the Bubblers, 11-4

BOILING SPRINGS – It doesn’t seem to matter where the Waynesboro varsity softball team plays these days, because they can win anywhere.

On Thursday, the team traveled north on I-81 to Boiling Springs and came home with another double-digit run total and an 11-4 Mid-Penn Colonial Division win.

The win improved Waynesboro’s record to 12-3 overall and 10-2 in the division with two more league games to play. The Maidens are home the next three games, beginning on Tuesday with a conference matchup against Shippensburg. The Greyhounds defeated the Maidens back on April 14 by a 3-0 score.

Waynesboro’s other league loss came against Greencastle-Antrim, 6-5, on April 2.

The Maidens have won seven games in a row.

Waynesboro led 2-0 after the top of the first inning, but the Bubblers forged a 3-2 lead in the home half of the inning.

The Maidens scored nine unanswered runs, plating one run in the fourth, six more in the fifth and two in the sixth inning to take a commanding 11-3 lead.

Slaydon Fisher had a monster day at the plate for Waynesboro. She went 4-for-4, which included three doubles, with two runs scored and three runs batted in.

Riley Shetler added two hits, including a solo home run. Shetler scored three runs.

Cameron Witte also homered for the Maidens, who had 12 hits in the game.

Abby McElroy pitched six innings and earned the win. She gave up nine hits and all four runs were earned. McElroy walked one and struck out four.

Waynesboro’s scheduled home game against Carlisle on Friday was rained out.

As of Friday, the Maidens are ranked sixth in the PIAA District 3-5A power rating. The ranking does not reflect the team’s win against Boiling Springs.

The top 16 teams qualify for the district playoffs, which begin Monday, May 23 at the higher seeded teams.
