Jay Alvarez, Rider to play at Mount St. Mary’s

Three-year Waynesboro Indians starter and current Rider University forward Jay Alvarez is coming to Knott Arena on Sunday, Feb. 23, when the Broncs visit Mount St. Mary’s in a men’s basketball game in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Tip-off is 2 p.m.

Alvarez a 6-foot-5 redshirt senior, is in his first season with Rider after playing his junior season at Houston Christian. He finished fifth in the Southland Conference at 15.6 points per game, while adding 4.5 rebounds per game.

Alvarez played the previous two seasons for Sullivan County Community College (New Jersey) where he was a two-time First Team All-Conference selection in leading the Generals to back-to-back Region 15 championships. Alvarez also earned District Player of the Year and NJCAA Division II First Team All-American as a sophomore at Sullivan, averaging 21.9 points and 8.6 rebounds.

During the 2024-25 season, Alvarez has started all 24 games for the Broncs, averaging 29.3 minutes per game. He has averaged 11.7 points a game and 5.0 rebounds per game.

MAIDENS CLOSE WITH WIN: The Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity girls’ basketball team finished the 2024-25 season with a 50-32 road win against Chambersburg on Wednesday, Feb. 12.

Breanna McIlquham and Genesis Alvarez scored 13 points apiece for the Maidens. Marissa Hedin added nine points in the win.

The win ended Waynesboro’s season with a 13-9 record. The Maidens won eight of their final nine games after starting out 3-6.

Seniors on this year’s team are Nikki Davis, Addie Shaull, Angie Ayala Luna, Marissa Hedin, Valentina Garcia and Genesis Alvarez.

2025 RAINBOW CLASSIC: Rainbow Gymnastics hosted the 2025 Rainbow Classic recently over three levels – gold, silver and bronze.

Rhenn Batey placed first on vault and floor, third on bars and beam, and first all-around.

Gina Calhoun placed second on vault, beam, and floor, third on bars, and third all-around.
