Wins on the field hockey pitch came at a premium last fall for the four high school field hockey teams in the Local.News1 coverage area: Waynesboro, Greencastle-Antrim, Chambersburg, and Fairfield.
The four squads combined for just 10 wins last season, with none of the teams qualifying for the postseason.
Improvement will be the name of the game when the teams take the field this fall. Waynesboro and Chambersburg return enough talent to make an impact, while Greencastle and Fairfield will feature fresh-faced lineups looking to leave a mark of their own.
Stick with Local.News1 in the days and weeks to come as we continue to preview the fall sports season before it kicks off later this month.
Below are team-by-team preview capsules for the 2025 high school field hockey season:
Waynesboro Tribe
Coach: Becky Steele
Division: Mid-Penn Colonial
Last season: 2-16, 0-12 division
Top projected returners: Shay Trumpower (Jr., M), Katie Baker (Sr., GK), Savannah Hammond (Jr., F), Morgan Kaiser (Jr.), Ansley Lake (Sr.), Trinity Martinez (So.)
Notable: The players on Waynesboro’s roster would like to do something that hasn’t been done in their lifetimes: Play in the postseason … Although the Maidens have qualified for the District 3 tourney 14 times in program history, they haven’t been to the dance since the 2005 season … Aria Roell, a Third Team defender on the Mid-Penn Colonial Division All-Star Team, has graduated, but Waynesboro is projected to return a couple of All-Stars in Shay Trumpower and Katie Baker … Trumpower, a junior midfield player, was named Second Team last season while Baker, a senior goalkeeper, earned a spot on the Third Team … With a solid cast of experienced returners that include Morgan Kaiser, Savannah Hammond, Ansley Lake, and Trinity Martinez, look for the Maidens to be much more competitive than last year’s two-win squad.
Opener: Monday, Aug. 25, at East Pennsboro
Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devils
Coach: Keara Allshouse
Division: Mid-Penn Colonial
Last season: 5-12, 3-9 division
Top projected returners: Acacia Long (Sr.), Natalie Medina (Jr.), Rowan Schubert, Rebecca Jones
Notable: Expect a new-look lineup from the Blue Devils, who graduated seven seniors, including Mid-Penn Colonial Division All-Stars Kelsey Beauchamp, a First Team defender, and Abigail Keilek, a Third Team midfield player … Acacia Long, a Second Team selection as a defender last season, returns for her senior campaign … Long is expected to be joined this season by goalkeeper Rebecca Jones, who made over 100 saves last season, as well as Natalie Medina and Rowan Schubert … Greencastle will be angling to qualify for the District 3 postseason for the 10th time in school history, and first time since 2016.
Opener: Monday, Aug. 25, at home vs. West Perry
Chambersburg Trojans
Coach: Kelsey Baker
Division: Mid-Penn Commonwealth
Last season: 2-15, 0-13 division
Top projected returners: Jaxin Frazer (Sr., F), Julia Elhajj (Sr., F), Reagan Barrett (Jr.), Kendall Flory (Sr.), Alex Bender (So.)
Notable: With a solid group of projected returners, Chambersburg will be angling to not only improve upon last year’s two-win campaign, but also put itself in a position to qualify for the District 3 tournament for the first time since 2008 … Jaxin Frazer is projected to return for her senior season after being named to the Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division’s First Team as a forward last fall … Frazer will be joined on the front line by fellow senior forward Julia Elhajj, who was a Commonwealth Third Teamer … Reagan Barrett, Kendall Flory, and Alex Bender all racked up valuable minutes in 2024 and are expected to return for the Trojans … Chambersburg will have to find a goalkeeper to replace Addyson Hollenshead, a Second Team selection who recorded more than 700 saves over her four-year career … The Trojans have qualified for the district tournament 17 times in program history, with the team winning the championship in 1996.
Opener: Tuesday, Aug. 26, at home vs. Cumberland Valley
Fairfield Knights
Coach: Carolyn Bieber
Division: YAIAA III
Last season: 1-16 overall, 0-12 division
Top projected returners: Reagan Gass (Jr., M/F/D), Aubree Eichenlaub (Jr., M/D/F), Aubrey Arvin (Jr., D/M/GK)
Notable: Fairfield landed its head coach for this season in early July, when Carolyn Bieber was tabbed to lead the Knights … Bieber inherits a program that has totaled two wins over the last two seasons … Fairfield will be aiming to forge ahead with the graduation of five seniors, including YAIAA First Team goalkeeper Bella Kozack and Honorable Mention forward Maddie Farace … Juniors Reagan Gass and Aubree Eichenlaub, two players who have scored varsity goals, are projected to return for the Knights, as is Aubrey Arvin, who racked up some goalkeeping experience backing up Kozack last fall … Fairfield has qualified for the District 3 postseason three times, with the most recent appearance coming in 1997.
Opener: Tuesday, Aug. 19, at home vs. Dover
