And just like that, the magic number is three. That’s the number of Local.News1 high school sports teams still alive in the fall postseason.
Two area football squads — the North Hagerstown Hubs and South Hagerstown Rebels — kicked off the playoffs with a bang last weekend. The No. 4-seeded Hubs advanced past the first round of the Class 3A West Regionals with a 43-7 win over No. 5 Northwood. As for the Rebels, seeded No. 4 in the Class 4A/3A tourney, pushed past the opening round with a 14-7 win over No. 5 Thomas S. Wootton.
North and South will both have their work cut out for them next weekend, as both squads are slated to take on No. 1 seeds.
It’s a good week to be a fan of the Hubs, as North’s girls volleyball team captured a 3-0 victory over Tuscarora in the 3A West Region I championship game. The Hubs advance to the MPSSAA state semifinals on Tuesday and will take on Reservoir.
The postseason journey has come to an end for both the Greencastle-Antrim girls volleyball team and the Chambersburg boys soccer squad. The Blue Devils’ season ended at 22-1 following a 3-0 loss to Oakland Catholic in the PIAA Class 3A quarterfinals, while the Trojans were bounced from the first of 3A states with a 3-1 loss to Abington. Also saying goodbye for 2025 is the Smithsburg girls flag football, which was ousted in the regional semifinals with a 32-20 loss to Damascus.
For the first time since 1977, the boys cross country squad from Smithsburg can officially call itself a state champion. The Leopards captured the MPSSAA 1A crown last weekend thanks to the brilliant running of Dylan Herbst (2nd in 16:42), Michael Wynkoop (5th in 17:08), Gavin Gross (14th in 17:42), Grayson Wynkoop (15th in 17:44), and Camilo Mellott (16th in 17:45). The 3A boys meet was highlighted by medalist finishes from North Hagerstown’s Landon Call (11th in 16:54) and Carson Wilt (22nd in 17:15).
Guided by top performers Kenzie Philp (4th in 19:22), Caroline Philp (11th in 20:24), and Anna Ramanan (16th in 20:39), the North Hagerstown girls finished fifth at 3A states.
