High school scores and standings from May 19-24

For the second season in a row, Smithsburg’s girls track and field squad has been crowned the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association 1A state champion.

The Leopards topped the field of 26 teams by piling up 100 points to win the title over Western Tech (91) and Allegany (68). Smithsburg got individual runner-up finishes from Jenna Howe (400), Cora Gentzel (3,200) and Alexandria Spithaler (pole vault), but the key to the Leopards’ championship was the dominance of the relays.

Smithsburg bested the state in all four relays. The 4×100 squad of Melyssa Bard, Howe, Taylor King, and Alaina Pate won in 50.26, while Lilian Hade, King, Howe, and Pate lifted the 4×200 team to victory in 1:45.70. The Leopards 4×400 relay of Grace Ellis, King, Kayla Hawbecker, and Howe blasted off for the top time of 4:04.41, while Ellis, Ella Fisher, Gentzel, and Hawbecker led the 4×800 to a triumph in 9:41.48.

Smithsburg’s boys finished 13th in the team race and was led by a third-place finish in 8:24.54 from its 4×800, as well as fifth-place finishes from Camilo Mellott (1,600), Michael Wynkoop (3,200), and Cadyn Nesbitt (pole vault).

Three North Hagerstown girls – Rian Johnson, Lauren Stine and Anna Chamberlin – combined for six medals at the MPSSAA 3A meet. Johnson turned in a monster effort, winning the 1,600 (4:45.88) and 3,200 (10:25.74), while adding a runner-up finish in the 800 (2:12.73). Stine took fourth in the 3,200 (10:52.55) and fifth in the 1,600 (5:02.71), while Anna Chamberlin took second in the high jump with a leap of 5-2.

South Hagerstown’s Chloe Gietka leaped her way to a fifth-place finish in the triple jump (37-0.25) and seventh-place showing in the long jump (16-9.5).

The PIAA Class AAA Track & Field Championships featured one area medalist, Chambersburg’s Blake Mallast, who took sixth in the 200 in 21.71.
