High school scores and standings from May 18-23

The biggest winner on the sports scene last week was none other than Mother Nature.

Weather caused all sorts of problems in the PIAA and MPSSAA postseason. Chambersburg and Greencastle-Antrim had district softball games washed away, while the MPSSAA Track and Field Championships were forced to postpone the final day of action until Monday.

The partial results from last week did, however, produce some excitement, not to mention a couple of state champions.

We’ll start at the state track championships in Maryland, where North Hagerstown freshman Caroline Philp nailed down a 3A state title in the 3,200 (10:44.31), while her twin sister Mackenzie finished third in 10:49.83. Smithsburg’s boys 4×800 relay team of Camilo Mellott, Gavin Gross, Dylan Lowe, and Dylan Herbst mined state gold in 8:11.28, while Herbst (2nd in 3,200, 9:39.46) and Cadyn Nesbitt (2nd in pole vault, 13-0) also earned podium finishes.

The PIAA Track Championships “weathered the storm” at Shippensburg University, and one area athlete shined brighter than the rest: Okenie McLaughlin. The Chambersburg senior captured a state championship in the triple jump with a hop, skip, and leap of 50-2.75.

Finally, Chambersburg’s boys baseball squad was able to dodge the rain last week and the Trojans took advantage by punching their ticket to the District 3-6A Championship game. The No. 5-seeded Trojans advanced to the final with a 3-0 win over No. 13 Northeastern and a 4-1 victory over No. 1 Hempfield. Chambersburg will face No. 11 Muhlenberg for the district crown on Monday.
