Only one baseball team from the Local.News1 coverage area remains alive in the playoffs: The Smithsburg Leopards.
Smithsburg had a big week, defeating Clear Spring 14-3 in the MPSSAA 1A West Region I Final before winning its opening-round game at states by a 7-1 score over Snow Hill. The Leopards are two wins from a state title, but face a significant hurdle when they face off against No. 1-seed Allegany on Tuesday.
Two other area baseball squads, Waynesboro and Greencastle-Antrim, saw their seasons come to an end in the opening round of the District 3 Tournament.
The track and field postseason heated up last week with the MPSSAA West Region Championships and the PIAA District 3 Championships. Smithsburg’s girls stole the show at 1A regionals, capturing the team title and getting a pair of wins in the sprints from Jenna Howe, who blasted off for victory in the 200 (25.84) and 400 (57.95). The Leopard boys got a win from Michael Wynkoop, who conquered the 3,200 in 9:58.54.
The 3A girls regionals were highlighted by the efforts of North Hagerstown’s Rian Johnson, who swept victories in the 800 (2:14.32), 1,600 (4:50.51), and 3,200 (10:44.36). On the boys side, Walker Mason scored a win in the 3,200 (9:44.95) for the Hubs.
Waynesboro’s Jaeda Dockman was crowned a district champion in Shippensburg last weekend. She won the high jump with a leap of 5-5. Fairfield’s boys also won a district title in the 4×400 relay with a time of 3:26.46.
Finally, lacrosse season came to an end when the last local squad still standing, South Hagerstown, went down in the MPSSAA 3A West Region II Final.
