Survive and advance. That’s all a ballclub can do at this stage of the season.
The baseball and softball playoffs are in full swing and the list of area teams still alive in the has been reduced to five squads.
Chambersburg, Greencastle-Antrim and Fairfield all survived their opening-round matchups in the District 3 baseball postseason. In softball, the high-seeded Trojans and Blue Devils received first-round byes and will kick off play next week.
Smithsburg’s baseball squad won the Class 1A West Region I title last week with an 18-3 win over Boonsboro, before the Leopards’ season concluded in the state quarterfinals with a 5-4 loss to Liberty.
Dylan Herbst had a brilliant day for Smithsburg at the Class 1A West Region Track and Field Championships, with the distance star exploding for wins in the 800 (1:56.70) and 1,600 (4:25.41), while also securing a runner-up finish in the 3,200 (9:55.85). Herbst also served as the anchor leg for Smithsburg’s region champion 4×800 relay squad, which finished in 8:13.54. The Class 4A North Region boys meet saw South Hagerstown’s Torin Sitter claim gold in the 400 (49.74) and guide the Rebels’ 4×200 squad to a title in 1:28.99.
On the girls side, South Hagerstown’s Chloe Gietka won a region title in the triple jump (37-6), while Smithsburg’s Skyla Mastronardi did the same in the high jump (5-2). North Hagerstown’s Philp twins, Mackenzie and Caroline, each crushed the distance events. Caroline won the region crown in the 1,600 in 5:00.57 and landed runner-up finishes in the 800 (2:19.92) and 3,200 (11:06.54), while Mackenzie conquered the 800 (2:17.90) and posted third-places in the 1,600 (5:06.55) and 3,200 (11:06.54).
Finally, the District 3-3A track meet saw two locals win titles. Okenie exploded for a district title in the long jump (23-8.25) and claimed a silver medal in the triple jump with a hop, skip, and leap of 48-0.5. Greencastle-Antrim’s Noah Parks added a championship of his own with a win in the 800 (1:53.67).
