Outside of the Chambersburg boys basketball locker room, there were very few that believed the Trojans actually had a chance in last weekened’s PIAA Class 6A First Round contest against District 1 power Coatesville.
But coach Shawn Shreffler’s boys were not just a stepping stone for the state-contending Red Raiders. Instead, they pulled off a 57-49 upset over Coatesville that will be talked about for years to come.
While Chambersburg gets to play on for at least one more game, the high-flying North Hagerstown boys have called it a season after falling to Frederick in the MPSSAA Class 3A West I Region Final.
Only one other area basketball team remains in the postseason: The undefeated Smithsburg girls. The Leopards (25-0), who throttled Pocomoke 77-24 in the MPSSAA Class 1A Quarterfinals, are two wins away from a state championship.
The wrestling postseason concluded last weekend with the PIAA and MPSSAA Championships.
Caleb Tyler, a senior heavyweight for Fairfield, took second in his PIAA Class 2A bracket, while Olivia Kearns — a Shalom Christian athlete who wrestles for Shippensburg — was the PIAA girls runner-up at 118 pounds.
The MPSSAA Class 4A/3A Championships featured a second-place finish from South Hagerstown’s Logan Ardinger (2nd at 106), while Smithsburg’s Rileigh Romberger was Maryland’s girls state runner-up at 120 pounds.
The postseason is set to roar forward this week with the PIAA Swimming Championships and the conclusion of the state basketball playoffs.
