For the second year in a row, sophomore Olivia Kearns is a PIAA South Central Region girls wrestling champion.
Kearns, a Shalom Christian student who wrestles in a co-op for Shippensburg, marched to the 118-pound title by winning all four of her matches by first-period fall. She needed just 42 seconds to dispatch Governor Mifflin’s Gianna Montegari in the championship match.
Kearns punched her ticket to the PIAA Championships next weekend, and the same can be said for a trio of Chambersburg girls: Reagan Evans (3rd at 136), Aulana Stanton (3rd at 170), and Jessica Li (4th at 106). Caleb Tyler, a heavyweight for Fairfield, will be making his third trip to states after taking second at the Class AA South East Regional last weekend.
The wrestling postseason is also heating up in Maryland, with the MPSSAA hosting its regional tournaments. Smithsburg’s girls crowned a 2A-1A West Region champion in Rileigh Romberger (120) and also got Top 3 finishes from Emmaleigh Mentzer (2nd at 115), Isabella Cox (3rd at 130), and Samantha Nieman (3rd at 170). On the boys side, the 4A-3A West Region tourney featured strong performances from South Hagerstown’s Logan Ardinger (3rd at 106) and Paul Ngolle (4th at 157).
From the wrestling mat to the pool, there was plenty at stake the District 3-3A Swimming Championships. Chambersburg’s boys took third in the team standings and got an individual title from Amir Tasker, who conquered the 200 freestyle in 1:39.08. On the girls side, the Trojans’ Calla Hoffman and Waynesboro’s Mady Barker each medaled in two events, as did Fairfield’s Samantha Lawler in the Class 2A meet.
Finally, our coverage area is down to its final three teams on the hardwood. Chambersburg’s boys secured a fifth-place finish at districts to earn a berth at the PIAA tourney, while North Hagerstown’s boys kept their season alive with an overtime victory over Tuscarora in the region quarterfinals. The undefeated Smithsburg girls open their postseason this week with a region semifinal matchup against
