Even when circumstances seem unfair, athletes are taught to handle adversity in stride.
North Hagerstown’s indoor track and field squad was dealt its fair share misfortune last week when a weather postponement forced the the Hubs to compete at the MPSSAA 3A West Region Championships on Tuesday, and then have to turn around on short rest and run at states on Friday.
This turn of events could have ruined the season for some, but the Hubs hung tough and brought home six state medals, including a gold. Lauren Stine captured a state title in the 3,200 (10:51.32), while Rian Johnson pocketed a silver in the 1,600 (4:58.66) and a bronze in the 800 (2:17.83). Anna Chamberlin (4th in high jump, 5-2), Walker Mason (7th in 3,200, 10:02.07), and Gabriel Ohaegbu (8th in 55 hurdles, 7.96).
Chambersburg’s indoor track team is gearing up for states in Pennsylvania, and the Trojans warmed up for the big meet by crowning two champs at last weekend’s State College Invitational: Daniel Casagrandi (400, 52.69) and Alaina Morris (pole vault, 10-0).
On the wrestling mat, four area wrestlers survived last weekend’s South Central Region 3A Championships at Spring Grove. Waynesboro’s Anthony Ausherman (2nd at 215) has advanced to the state tournament, as has Chambersburg’s Zachary Sherman (4th at 127), Frank Barrientos (4th at 285), and Ashton Romberger (5th at 139).
Grappling also heated up in Maryland last weekend with the Washington County Wrestling Tournament, which saw North Hagerstown’s Marcello Falcinio (157) and South Hagerstown’s Logan Ardinger (106) each nail down titles. The Washington County Girls Tournament saw Smithsburg win the team title and crown five champs: Emmaleigh Mentzer (115), Rileigh Romberger (120), Bella Cox (130), Kayleigh Wetzel (135), and Laila Ricketts (140). South Hagerstown also had a pair of champions in Grace Reynolds (110) and Ariyanah Freeman (145).
Moving to the hardwood, Chambersburg’s boys basketball team is two wins away from a District 3-6A championship after the No. 4-seeded Trojans navigated through the week with wins over No. 13 Carlisle, 66-46, and No. 5 Wilson, 41-39.
Finally, Chambersburg’s Keagan Myers is the proud owner of a district medal after placing fourth at last weekend’s District 3 Diving Championships.
