The girls indoor track program at North Hagerstown can no longer keep Taraji Nartey a secret.
The freshman sprinter had a breakout debut at the Ray Shriver Invitational last weekend, surging to wins in both the 55 (7.55) and 300 (43.93). The Hubs, who also got victories from Caroline Philp (1,600) and Mackenzie Philp (3,200), captured the team title. Smithsburg surged to the boys title and got a win in the 3,200 from Michael Wynkoop. Torin Sitter, of South Hagerstown, won the 300 at the Jeff Spielman Winter Classic.
On the boys hardwood, Greencastle-Antrim shook off an 0-1 start to its season by ripping off three-straight wins last week, while both North and South Hagerstown improved to 2-0 with victories. No area basketball squad has been more dominant than the Smithsburg girls, who have steamrolled opponents by a 251-137 score on their way to a 4-0 record.
Chambersburg’s girls continued to flex their muscle on the wrestling mat last weekend, with the Trojans going 4-1 at the Gettysburg Duals. Three area boys wrestling teams — Waynesboro, Greencastle, and Fairfield — all came home with medals from the Carlisle Holiday Classic. The top area finisher from the tournament was Waynesboro’s Steven Howard, who claimed third at 139 pounds.
Finally, the Waynesboro girls swimming squad kicked off its season with a 113-55 triumph over Big Spring.
Below is a sport-by-sport look at how teams in the Local.News1 coverage area performed last week:
