GREENCASTLE – The Borough of Greencastle, has issued a proclamation declaring a limited state of emergency due to extremely dry conditions and lack of substantial rainfall. The proclamation, which took effect Thursday, March 13, prohibits all forms of open burning within the borough limits until significant rainfall alleviates the current drought conditions.
The comprehensive ban includes recreational fires and campfires, emphasizing the critical need for fire safety during this period of environmental stress. This measure aligns with similar restrictions implemented in neighboring municipalities, which have also enacted burn bans to mitigate wildfire risks.
Drought conditions are expected to persist in the region through Spring 2025, further emphasizing the necessity for the burn ban and other water conservation measures. The current drought situation is classified as moderate, underscoring the importance of these restrictions.
The proclamation is set to remain in effect for seven days, unless it is rescinded, modified, ratified or extended by a resolution of the Greencastle Borough Council. This timeframe allows for reassessment of the situation based on any changes in weather patterns or rainfall.
Local fire officials stress the importance of compliance with the burn ban, noting that human activities are the primary cause of wildfires. Residents are urged to adhere to these restrictions to prevent potential hazards that could lead to uncontrolled fires, especially given the prevalence of dry vegetation and poor air quality in the region.
As the drought conditions continue, residents are encouraged to stay informed about any updates or changes to the burn ban and to practice water conservation methods to help mitigate the effects of the ongoing dry spell.
