MCCONNELLSBURG – The Mid-Penn Colonial Division made the trip “over the mountain” to Great Cove Golf Course, and the host school, James Buchanan, placed third out of seven teams.
Gettysburg vaulted over everyone to win the match with a collective score of 327. Greencastle-Antrim placed second with 333, and James Buchanan finished third with a score of 337.
Waynesboro tied Shippensburg with a score of 339 but dropped to fifth place after losing the tiebreaker. Northern, the standard for the league teams this season, fell flat and finished sixth.
The Polar Bears and Greyhounds are tied for first place after four matches and with three remaining in the regular season at 18-6. James Buchanan is third with a 16-8 record. Gettysburg takes over fourth place at 12-12, and Greencastle is fifth with an 11-13 mark. Waynesboro occupies sixth place at 9-15.
The Tribe is getting better individually, but the division is a gauntlet with considerable parity. Landon Crable was Waynesboro’s top finisher with 82, which tied him with Gettysburg’s Nolan Reinert for fifth place overall. Caiden Shacreaw and Rylan Nichols each shot 83, with Ryan Jenkins rounding out the top four scorers with 91.
“We need to count four out of the five scores, and mine just aren’t quite good enough this year,” said Waynesboro coach Ryan Henderson. “We did tie Shippensburg, but as we went to a fifth score, my fifth score was not good enough.
“I’m still very happy with my top three scorers. Landon, Caiden, and Rylan are really putting up some consistent numbers. I’m very pleased with their play. Ryan Jenkins has really shown some improvement. He’s a first-year golfer as a senior. He is certainly fun to watch. We have three regular-season matches left, and I look forward to working with this crew over the next couple of weeks to try to improve our record before the end of the season.”
One of the reasons Gettysburg leapfrogged the field was medalist Landon Blocher, who finished the 18-hole match with 74. He bested Shippensburg’s Ben Horgos by two strokes and Greencastle-Antrim’s Camden Eby by three strokes. JB’s Abram Stock rounded out those who shot in the 70s as he finished with 78.
Eagles Crossing Golf Club will be the next course on the league schedule, slated for September 3 in Carlisle. Eagles Crossing is a par-71, 6,450-yard course. Tee-time will be 2 p.m.
